THE FREEKBOX

What is a FreekBox?

FreekBoxes are computers built at FREE GEEK from donated parts. Volunteers may earn a FreekBox of their own by completing the Adoption or Build program.

FreekBoxes are built to be as similar as possible to each other, and we do not take requests. This is what goes into a Freekbox (specifications expressed as ranges may fall anywhere within that range).

  • Processor speed: 1.5 - 2.2 ghz (Wow! We've come so far!)
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 20 - 30 GB hard drive
  • CD-R/RW drive
  • Floppy disk drive
  • 17 inch color monitor
  • 56k internal Modem
  • 10/100 Network card
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Speakers

We have found that most of our adopters want to use their computer for word processing, web browsing, and email. FreekBoxes have been primarily designed to do these things. The software on the FreekBoxes is all free software. It's free to use, but also made in a way that promotes the freedom of programmers and end users to share the fruits of their labor and build on one another's successes.

Specifically, we install the Ubuntu operating system, a variant of GNU/Linux, with the Gnome desktop environment. Ubuntu shares many of our goals: it is easy to learn and use, but also very flexible and capable of supporting a wide variety of hardware and peripherals.

For word processing and other office-type applications, we use OpenOffice.org, which is very similar to the better-known Microsoft Office suite.

There's a wide range of other software on the FreekBoxes including the popular Mozilla Firefox web browser, The Gimp image editing software, and several games.

Support for FreekBoxes

When someone gets a FreekBox, they are also entitled to a class, where they learn basic use of the computer. We offer phone, email, and drop-in technical support to people who have earned a computer.

It should be noted that we cannot support FreekBoxes that have had a different operating system installed or that have had hardware changes.
